We Must Protect Children From Gun Violence

I just sent my 5-year-old daughter to her elementary school for the day, and I feel nauseous. Will this be the last time I see her? As I was helping her get ready this morning, I wondered if I should put her dirty clothes in the laundry… will I want them to still smell like her if she doesn’t come home today?

These thoughts are on the minds of millions of parents this morning, all across Michigan and our nation. It doesn’t have to be this way. Everytown For Gun Safety ranks Michigan in the middle of states when it comes to sensible gun safety policies. Michigan is missing many key laws laid out by Everytown, such as secure storage requirements, and all their policy recommendations regulating the firearm industry and product safety. Meanwhile, to ensure safe storage and protect children, Michigan Democrats have introduced packages of bills time and time again, only to be ignored by those politicians in charge, who are too scared to stand up to the gun lobby. I support the packages of sensible gun safety policies introduced by Democrats earlier this session, and would support the same, if not stronger, packages if elected.

These policy stances are why I was designated a Gun Sense Candidate by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, and I pledge to serve with gun safety in mind.

I pray that my daughter comes home safely from school today, tomorrow, and all her years ahead. With your support, I can work to ensure her safety, and the safety of all kids in schools across Michigan.

Please take care of yourself today,

Carrie Rheingans
