Carrie's Priorites
Carrie will fight for:
Healthcare
Carrie is a health policy expert with over two decades of experience, including teaching graduate courses on health and mental health care policy, advocating for equitable HIV and AIDS policies, and implementing collaborations between health care and public health systems. Carrie believes that healthcare is a human right, not a privilege for those who can afford it.
Carrie will fight to:
-
Guarantee healthcare to all Michiganders, not tied to a job, by creating a universal, Medicare-for-all-style healthcare system
-
Lower the cost of prescription drugs
-
Expand access to behavioral and mental health care
-
Increase supports for people struggling with substance use disorders
Environment
Carrie knows that climate change is the existential crisis of our time and that we must urgently take action to reduce its effects. Our environment has an impact on every aspect of our lives, health, wellbeing, and recreation. Good stewardship is crucial to ensuring that these precious gifts remain for generations to come.
Carrie will fight to:
-
Reduce the effects of climate change
-
Protect our land, air, and water
-
Hold corporations who pollute our environment accountable, like Gelman Sciences
-
Prepare Michigan workers and businesses to be leaders in the emerging green energy sector
Supporting Workers and Employers
Carrie knows that working people and employers are the backbone of our community. She believes that a healthy workforce is one that is well-compensated and treated with respect. When we have a strong working and middle class, we all thrive.
Carrie will fight to:
-
Protect workers from the worst effects of climate change
-
Increase protections for union labor
-
Raise the minimum wage to a living wage and increase pay for some of our most overworked and underpaid professionals, like teachers and nurses.
-
Expand workforce development opportunities, trade school, and apprenticeships (Michigan Works!)
Protecting Rights
Carrie believes in a Michigan that is welcoming to all, a place where a person can be who they are, love who they love, have autonomy over their own body, and feel safe in their own community.
Carrie will fight to:
-
Guarantee that every person seeking abortion services, birth control, and IVF is able to do so freely.
-
Keep the government out of our bedrooms and personal lives by codifying privacy cases previously decided by the Supreme Court: protecting same-sex marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges), protecting interracial marriage (Loving v. Virginia), protecting sexual interactions between consenting adults (Lawrence v. Texas), and protecting contraception (Griswold v. Connecticut).
-
Protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination and ensuring that the trans community is able to receive the healthcare they need (gender-affirming care)
-
Ensure that every Michigander is safe from gun violence in the privacy of their own home and public spaces with an assault weapons ban
Working Families
As a mom and a working family member, Carrie knows how hard it can be just to get by today. Forty-one percent of Michigan households struggle to afford the basic necessities, according to the Michigan Association of United Ways. In the wealthiest country in the world, this is unacceptable. Carrie believes that in order for the state of Michigan to thrive, we must make life easier and more affordable for working families.
Carrie will fight for:
-
Universal childcare
-
Paid family and sick leave
-
Subsidized eldercare so seniors are able to age in place with dignity
-
Affordable housing
-
Rent control
