What We've Achieved
As your Representative in the Michigan House, Carrie has:
Reforming Healthcare
Carrie introduced legislation to provide universal healthcare for all Michiganders, make prescription drugs more affordable, expand provider capacity for nurses, physician associates, and EMTs, make overdose reversal drugs more widely available, and legalize public health tools, such as syringe access programs and fentanyl test strips, to combat the opioid epidemic.
Protecting Abortion and LGBTQ+ Rights
Carrie believes that Michigan can only thrive when all of its citizens’ rights are protected. Carrie voted to expand abortion rights and protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders from discrimination by enshrining protections in our state laws.
Defending Democracy
Carrie voted to codify voting rights, introduced legislation to add Michigan to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and championed transparency laws for elected officials and candidates.
Preventing Gun Violence
Carrie proudly voted for a gun violence prevention package that expanded background checks, required safe storage, enabled extreme risk protection orders, and reduced threats of gun violence from convicted domestic abusers.
Expanding Labor Rights
Carrie voted to repeal the failed “Right to Work” law, restore prevailing wage, expand collective bargaining for graduate student researchers and teachers, and introduced a bill to enable student athlete organizing. She also was proud to join the UAW on the picket line in their strike for the fair wages and better benefits that they deserve.
Safeguarding the Environment
Carrie voted for a package of bills that ensures Michigan is a national leader in combating climate change and in the production of clean energy. She also voted to keep kids safe from lead exposure, require environmental justice communities to be factored into decision-making, sponsored a bill to establish a statewide septic code, and co-sponsored legislation to hold corporations that pollute our environment accountable for their actions. Carrie received a perfect score from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.
Supporting Kids and Working Families
Carrie voted to put more money in the pockets of working families, provide school breakfast and lunch to all of Michigan’s children, and ensure that all high school graduates can attend tuition-free community college.
Championing Renters' Rights
Carrie introduced legislation to allow local governments to institute rent control policies if they so choose. She also introduced a bill that would provide information to tenants regarding their rights, legal resources, and 2-1-1 services.
Uplifting Indigenous Michiganders
Carrie was one of the lead sponsors of a package of bills seeking to uplift our Indigenous siblings, a community that lawmakers in Lansing have long overlooked. Carrie’s bill designated Manoomin, or wild rice, as Michigan’s first official native grain! Manoomin holds cultural and spiritual significance to the Indigenous peoples who have lived here for thousands of years. Other bills in the package protect students who wear traditional regalia from discrimination, add tribal voices to the Michigan Wolf Management Advisory Council and Michigan Wildlife Council, and protect native pollinators.
Carrie also ensured that tribal voices will be included in the legislative process moving forward, creating a brand new position in the legislature, the Office of Tribal Legislative Liaison.
